Green Industry Snapshot
Greenhouse, Nursery and Sod
- The nursery sector generally had a good spring. An overall balanced supply and demand situation for most varieties of nursery stock has kept pricing mostly favorable for growers.
- For greenhouse/bedding plant growers the story is more nuanced, with many growers seeing a “reversion to average,” going back to pre-COVID sales volumes, and some negative impact from a lot of rainy weather during the key spring selling season.
- With the addition of Walmart, most green goods sales at big box stores are now pay-by-scan or vendor-managed. This has elevated the quality and assortment of plant material at chain stores, but shifted inventory costs back onto growers.
- For independent garden centers and nurseries, results vary, with some seeing continued strong profitability while others are facing more challenges.
