With the maple season just around the corner, stay informed on the latest industry trends.
Farm Credit East recently hosted a webinar with University of Vermont Extension Associate Professor, Mark Cannella, providing insights for the maple industry in 2025. As U.S. maple syrup production continues to grow, there are potential changes for the industry on the horizon.  Following are the key takeaways from this webinar.

  1. Production trends

U.S. maple syrup production increased in 2024, with the second highest yield recorded in the past 25 years. Looking at the past two decades, tap counts and production have increased significantly and weather conditions continue to play a crucial role in production.

  2. Sector priorities

The International Maple Syrup Institute (IMSI) has several working groups, including the Standard of Identity Committee and the U.S. Statistics Committee, aiming to standardize production practices and improve industry data accuracy. The IMSI is also focusing on the Isopropyl Alcohol Approval Initiative and the potential benefits of using isopropyl alcohol for cleaning tubing systems.

  3. Climate change and environmental impact

The industry needs to adopt a broader perspective on risk exposure due to climate change. Climate change can disrupt production in a variety of ways, and it is important to be aware of them, including wind events, pest infestations and even power outages. It will also be important for the industry to incorporate sustainability and carbon footprint reduction efforts moving forward.

  4. Quality assurance and workforce challenges

Maintaining high syrup quality is crucial, but the industry faces challenges such as an aging workforce and high capital costs. For the industry to continue to grow, there will likely be a need for capital access programs and labor policies in the coming years.

  5. Market development

There is likely a need for generic promotion and an education program for pure maple syrup, which can enhance market development and address other industry challenges. This would require collective action and representation within the maple industry.
